La Gomera, the second-smallest of the main islands in Spain’s Canary Island chain, is marked by craggy volcanic mountains crisscrossed with hiking trails. In higher altitudes, dense forests of ferns and moss-covered trees grow in the mists of Garajonay National Park.

San Sebastián de La Gomera is the capital of La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. The Church of the Assumption has a mural depicting an 18th-century battle, and a museum with religious artwork dating from the 16th century. Nearby, La Gomera Archaeological Museum traces the island’s indigenous cultures through artifacts and scale models. South is the Torre del Conde, a medieval fortification set in a lush park.

The north western district of Vallehermoso is towered over by the 400m tall volcanic vent, Roque Cano. Green banana plantations, small vineyards and potato fields cover large parts of this beautiful valley.

In times gone by, Vallehermoso was the economical and cultural centre of La Gomera.

Toward the coast, the Valle Gran Rey canyon leads past the whitewashed cliffside village of La Calera and ends at black-sand Atlantic beaches.

The fishing village Playa Santiago, in the delta of many beautiful ravines, lies in the sunny south of La Gomera. In the area where fish used to be processed, independent tourists can enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the town.
