Masca is a small mountain village situated on the south side of Tenerife. The village is home to around 100 inhabitants. The village lies at an altitude of 650m in the Teno Massif mountains, one of the oldest parts of Tenerife. The village lies at the head of the Masca Gorge.
Masca was one of the Guanches last refuges from the Spanish conquistadors in 1496. Its extraordinary position, virtually isolated until 1970s, meant it had to be self sufficient, growing crops of potatoes, tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, vines and fruit trees.
Buenavista is the last northern town in Tenerife; the road ends here, beyond which all you find is the rocky fortress of the Teno Mountains. But the charm of this beutiful northern village is not only about its stunning scenery - it was declared a site of Cultural Interest for its historic streets and for the numerous examples of small traditional houses which combine different traditional styles brought in by the Spanish conquerors
